Dear Billy E,
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

Tennis Fest 2017 Benefiting Keith Collins Foundation “Live Like Keith”

Report by Director Trey Luby
Advantage NOLA Tennis Association

Tennis Fest 2017 is officially in the books and to say it was a challenging
weekend would be an understatement to say the least.  Not only were we in transition moving to a new facility to host our event this year as well as facing another year of tremendous growth but also had to deal with unprecedented weather issues including no less than fourteen different rain delays over four days.  Ultimately, after several late nights and constant recalibration of the schedule as well as adjustments to scoring, we were able to complete all main draw matches that needed to be finished to wrap the event up at 2am early Monday morning, playing close to 200 matches in twelve hours on Sunday.  The level of play in the Open Divisions continues to increase with each passing year making this, on some levels, New Orleans only semi-professional tennis event.  We enjoyed continued support from both the local tennis playing public here in the greater New Orleans metro area and the North Shore as well as the growing contingent of players coming in every year from Florida, Texas, Hattiesburg, and Baton Rouge.

We will finish with close to 470 competitors this year placing us as the largest adult tennis event run through Tennis Link in the Southern Section of the USTA for the second straight year and one of the large tennis events in the country overall in 2017.

First and foremost, we would like to thank the University of New Orleans and University Tennis Center for hosting our event this year and particularly, Burzis Kanga, Vince Granito, and Jason Veillion.  Secondly, the great food is one of the things that makes this event stand out and that is all due to the efforts of Chef Donald Link and The Link Restaurant Group, Southside Cafe in Slidell, Stephanie Mueller and Dominos Pizza, and last but not least, Manny DePascual and Chuck Cannon (Cannon Medical, Inc. Construction Division) who kept his on-site grill going around the clock.  Lee MacAlester and Boh Capitano had the toughest job of the weekend working the tournament desk during much of what was weather-fueled chaos and Kerri Becker and Chris Dazet from NOMATA were invaluable resources throughout the planning and execution of our event this year.  None of this would be possible without all of the above as well as all of the other sponsors and volunteers who gave graciously of their time and resources to make this event possible.  We will be updating our FaceBook page (Advantage NOLA Tennis Association) in the coming weeks to adequately acknowledge all of those who helped make all this possible.
